Learn how to make smooth, creamy hummus at home using simple ingredients. This recipe delivers a high-protein, healthy chickpea snack that tastes better than store-bought.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ice water (or more, for thinning)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the drained chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, minced garlic, cumin, and salt into a food processor.
  2. Process the mixture for one minute, scraping down the sides as needed.
  3. With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in the ice water through the feed tube. Continue processing for two to three minutes until the mixture is very smooth. This step is key for creamy hummus.
  4. Taste the hummus and add more salt or lemon juice if needed.
  5. If the hummus is too thick, add one more tablespoon of ice water and process until you reach your desired consistency.
  6. Transfer the smooth hummus to a serving bowl. Drizzle with olive oil before serving.

Notes

  • For the creamiest result, peel the skins off the chickpeas after draining. This takes extra time but makes a noticeable difference.
  • If you do not have ice water, use cold tap water.
  • Use high-quality tahini for the best flavor in your tahini dressing ideas.
