Ingredients
Scale
1.5 lbs ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
8 slices Texas Toast (thick cut bread)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This is your savory beef filling.
While the filling simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. Brush one side of each slice of Texas Toast with melted butter.
Place the buttered side down in a large, dry skillet or on a griddle over medium heat. Toast until golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove the toast from the heat. Place four slices of toast butter-side down on a baking sheet.
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the four slices of toast.
Top the meat mixture with shredded cheddar cheese.
Place the baking sheet under a preheated broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Top each cheesy sloppy joe with the remaining four slices of Texas Toast, serving immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the meat mixture.
You can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef in this recipe.
If you prefer a less messy sandwich, serve the sloppy joe mixture open-faced on the bottom slice of toast.
