Make this easy homemade tartar sauce recipe for a creamy and tangy condiment perfect for fried fish, shrimp, or as a versatile dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish, drained
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill pickles
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon capers, drained and chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, chopped dill pickles, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard.
  2. If using, stir in the chopped capers and fresh parsley.
  3. Mix all ingredients together until well combined and smooth.
  4. Taste the sauce and season with salt and black pepper as needed.
  5. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. This step improves the taste.
  6. Serve chilled with your favorite seafood or use as a sandwich spread.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the mayonnaise with sour cream.
  • If you prefer a sharper tang, add 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar along with the lemon juice.
  • This sauce tastes best when made ahead of time. It keeps well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
