Ingredients
Scale
1 large head of broccoli, cut into uniform florets
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 tablespoon butter or olive oil (optional)
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the broccoli by washing the head thoroughly and cutting it into bite-sized florets. Aim for pieces that are similar in size for even cooking.
Place a steamer basket inside a large pot or deep skillet. Add 1/2 cup of water to the bottom of the pot, making sure the water level is below the bottom of the steamer basket.
Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Place the broccoli florets into the steamer basket. Cover the pot tightly with a lid.
Reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer. Steam the broccoli for 4 to 6 minutes. For tender-crisp broccoli, check it at 4 minutes. For softer texture, steam for the full 6 minutes.
Remove the lid and immediately check the texture by piercing a floret with a fork. It should be tender but still offer slight resistance.
Remove the steamer basket from the pot. Transfer the steamed broccoli to a serving dish.
Season immediately with salt, pepper, and the optional butter or olive oil. Serve this easy vegetable side dish right away.
Notes
To achieve bright green vegetables, do not overcook the broccoli. The short steaming time preserves the color and nutrients.
If you prefer a restaurant style broccoli copycat flavor, toss the hot steamed broccoli with 1 tablespoon of melted butter, 1 minced garlic clove, and 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese.
For a microwave broccoli hack, place florets in a microwave-safe bowl with 2 tablespoons of water and cover. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes.
