Make incredibly soft, buttery yeast rolls that melt in your mouth. This recipe delivers fluffy homemade rolls perfect for any meal or holiday gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened, for brushing
  • 1/4 cup honey, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm milk and yeast in a large bowl. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt into the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Gently punch down the dough. Divide it into 18 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Arrange the dough balls close together in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  8. Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again in a warm spot for 30 to 45 minutes, or until puffy.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the rolls for 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  11. While the rolls are still hot, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Whisk the honey into the melted butter.
  12. Brush the warm honey butter generously over the tops of the hot rolls. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder to the honey butter mixture for a savory twist.
  • If you are short on time, you can make these rolls ahead and let them rise slowly in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Ensure your milk temperature is correct; water that is too hot will kill the yeast.
