Create a rich, creamy hot cocoa mix in a large batch using simple pantry staples. This DIY powder is perfect for stocking your pantry or making a thoughtful holiday gift.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 1 cup powdered milk (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, deepens chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Measure the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk (if using), salt, and instant espresso powder (if using) into a very large bowl.
  2. Use a whisk to thoroughly combine all the dry ingredients. Whisk for at least two minutes to ensure the cocoa powder is fully incorporated and there are no lumps.
  3. If you want a very fine powder, transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse several times until smooth. Do not over-process, as this can heat the mixture.
  4. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to airtight containers, such as mason jars, for storage. This recipe makes a big batch suitable for gifting.
  5. To prepare one serving, mix 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir until completely dissolved and enjoy your comforting winter warmer.

Notes

  • For a hot cocoa mix without powdered milk, simply omit the powdered milk and increase the cocoa powder by 1 cup to maintain a strong chocolate flavor.
  • To make this a hot chocolate gift idea, layer the dry ingredients in a decorative jar and top with mini marshmallows before sealing. Attach a tag with the serving instructions.
  • Store this pantry staple hot chocolate mix in a cool, dry place for up to one year.
