Ingredients
Scale
4 cups granulated sugar
2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
1 cup powdered milk (optional, for extra creaminess)
Measure the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk (if using), salt, and instant espresso powder (if using) into a very large bowl.
Use a whisk to thoroughly combine all the dry ingredients. Whisk for at least two minutes to ensure the cocoa powder is fully incorporated and there are no lumps.
If you want a very fine powder, transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse several times until smooth. Do not over-process, as this can heat the mixture.
Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to airtight containers, such as mason jars, for storage. This recipe makes a big batch suitable for gifting.
To prepare one serving, mix 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir until completely dissolved and enjoy your comforting winter warmer.
Notes
For a hot cocoa mix without powdered milk, simply omit the powdered milk and increase the cocoa powder by 1 cup to maintain a strong chocolate flavor.
To make this a hot chocolate gift idea, layer the dry ingredients in a decorative jar and top with mini marshmallows before sealing. Attach a tag with the serving instructions.
Store this pantry staple hot chocolate mix in a cool, dry place for up to one year.
