Make a thick, frosty caramel frappe at home that tastes just like your favorite coffee shop version using this straightforward recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, chilled or frozen into cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (recipe below or store-bought)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 1/2 cups ice cubes
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Extra caramel sauce, for drizzling
  • For Quick Caramel Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or full-fat coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Coffee Base: Brew your coffee strong and allow it to cool completely, or freeze leftover coffee into ice cube trays for the best texture.
  2. Make the Quick Caramel Sauce: Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Do not stir; gently swirl the pan occasionally until the sugar dissolves and turns a deep amber color.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat. Carefully whisk in the cream (it will bubble vigorously). Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Let the sauce cool completely before using.
  4. Assemble the Frappe: In a high-powered blender, combine the chilled coffee, milk, 1/4 cup of the cooled caramel sauce, sugar (if using), and ice cubes.
  5. Blend on high speed until the mixture is completely smooth and thick. If the mixture is too thick, add milk one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
  6. Pour the blended caramel frappe into a tall glass.
  7. Top generously with whipped cream and drizzle extra caramel sauce over the top before serving immediately.

Notes

  • For a thicker, creamier texture, use frozen coffee cubes instead of liquid coffee and ice.
  • If you do not have an espresso machine, strong cold brew concentrate works well as a base for this blended iced coffee caramel drink.
  • To make this a dairy free caramel frappe, use oat milk or almond milk and ensure your caramel sauce uses a non-dairy cream substitute.
  • Adjust the amount of caramel sauce in the blender to control the sweetness level of your homemade caramel frappe.
