Make the best classic green bean casserole for your holiday table. This recipe uses simple ingredients for a creamy, comforting side dish that is always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the drained green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
  3. Stir in 1 cup of the crispy fried onions into the green bean mixture.
  4. Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions over the top.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  8. Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a Southern style variation, stir 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese into the bean mixture before baking.
  • You can prepare this casserole up to one day ahead. Cover and refrigerate before baking. Add 10 minutes to the initial covered baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
  • To make an air fryer green bean casserole, bake at 325°F (160°C) for 15 minutes, then top with onions and cook for 3-5 more minutes until brown.
