Make authentic, decadent French Hot Chocolate at home. This recipe delivers the luxurious, thick texture you find in Parisian cafes using high-quality dark chocolate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher), finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the whole milk and heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat. Warm the mixture until steam begins to rise, but do not let it boil.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and sugar with about 2 tablespoons of the warm milk mixture until a smooth paste forms. This prevents lumps.
  3. Add the chocolate paste mixture to the saucepan. Continue heating over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and incorporated.
  4. Once melted, reduce the heat to low. Whisk continuously for 3 to 5 minutes. You are looking for the mixture to thicken slightly and become velvety. Do not let it boil.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the rich French hot chocolate into mugs. Serve immediately for a luxurious winter treat.

Notes

  • For the most authentic Parisian experience, use chocolate with at least 70% cacao content.
  • If you prefer a thicker consistency, simmer for an extra minute or two, whisking constantly.
  • Top with fresh whipped cream or a dusting of cocoa powder before serving.
