Make this easy pierogi casserole for a hearty and delicious dinner that hits the spot. This recipe layers tender potato pierogi with smoky kielbasa, creamy sauce, and melted cheese for a simple, comforting family meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (12 ounce) package smoked kielbasa sausage, sliced
  • 1 (24 ounce) package frozen potato and cheese pierogi
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sliced kielbasa until lightly browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the condensed cheddar cheese soup, sour cream, milk, onion powder, and black pepper until smooth. This forms your creamy sauce.
  4. Add the frozen pierogi and the cooked kielbasa to the bowl with the sauce. Gently fold everything together until the pierogi and sausage are evenly coated.
  5. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese into the pierogi mixture.
  6. Pour the entire mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly throughout and the cheese on top is melted and lightly golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onion, if desired.

Notes

  • If you prefer a slow cooker method for this crockpot pierogi casserole, combine all ingredients (except the top cheese layer) in a slow cooker. Cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1.5 to 2 hours. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top for the last 15 minutes of cooking.
  • You can substitute the cheddar soup with Alfredo sauce for a different creamy potato casserole flavor profile.
  • For a heartier family meal, add 1 cup of frozen mixed vegetables (like peas and carrots) when mixing the ingredients.
