Make this classic French toast recipe quickly on the stovetop. It uses simple ingredients to create golden, fluffy slices perfect for any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil for the griddle

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until fully combined.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter or oil and let it melt until it sizzles slightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 10 to 15 seconds per side. Do not over-soak.
  4. Place the soaked bread onto the hot griddle. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast and keep warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter or oil to the griddle as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for the best texture; it absorbs the batter without becoming soggy.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
  • If you want a crispier edge, sprinkle a small amount of granulated sugar onto the butter in the pan just before placing the bread down.
