Make a fun, comforting fusion appetizer by wrapping classic cheeseburger fillings inside crispy fried egg roll wrappers. This recipe includes a simple dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 4 slices American cheese, cut into small pieces
  • 12 egg roll wrappers
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for sealing)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • For the Secret Sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish, 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it browns. Drain off all excess grease.
  2. Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and diced onion into the cooked beef. Cook for 2 more minutes until the onion softens slightly. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool for 10 minutes.
  3. Stir the small pieces of American cheese into the cooled beef mixture until just combined.
  4. Set up your rolling station: place the egg roll wrappers on a clean surface with a small bowl of water and the beaten egg nearby.
  5. Place about 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture near one corner of an egg roll wrapper. Fold the corner over the filling. Fold in the sides, then roll tightly away from you, brushing the final edge with the beaten egg to seal it shut. Repeat with remaining filling and wrappers.
  6. Prepare the dipping sauce by whisking together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, and vinegar in a small bowl. Set aside.
  7. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  8. Carefully place 3 or 4 egg rolls into the hot oil, ensuring you do not overcrowd the pot. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are deep golden brown and very crispy.
  9. Remove the cooked egg rolls with tongs and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve the crispy cheeseburger egg rolls immediately with the secret sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For the crispiest result, use high-quality, thin egg roll wrappers, not spring roll wrappers.
  • If you prefer not to deep fry, you can air fry these at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown.
  • You can add finely minced dill pickle chips to the filling mixture for extra flavor.
