This recipe delivers the ultimate comfort dessert: tender, cinnamon-spiced apples beneath a perfectly crisp, buttery oat topping. It is simple to prepare and tastes like home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium baking apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until the apples are evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt for the topping.
  4. Cut the cold butter pieces into the dry topping mixture using a pastry blender or your fingertips. Work the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crisp, and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  7. Let the apple crumble cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for the best experience.

Notes

  • For the crispiest topping, make sure your butter is very cold when mixing the crumble ingredients.
  • If you prefer a sweeter filling, increase the granulated sugar in the apple layer to 1/3 cup.
  • This dessert is excellent made ahead; cover and refrigerate the assembled, unbaked crumble for up to 24 hours. Add 10 minutes to the baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
