Make this simple, flavorful Italian bread dip appetizer using quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It is a quick appetizer for guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup good quality balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients. You will need a small, shallow serving dish for the dip.
  2. Place the minced garlic into the serving dish.
  3. Pour the extra virgin olive oil over the garlic. Let this sit for about five minutes to allow the oil to absorb some garlic flavor.
  4. Add the balsamic vinegar to the dish with the oil. Do not stir yet.
  5. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper evenly over the surface of the oil and vinegar mixture.
  6. If you are using Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it over the top now.
  7. Serve immediately with slices of artisan bread or crusty Italian bread for dipping.

Notes

  • For a gourmet bread dip recipe, use a thick, aged balsamic vinegar for a richer flavor.
  • If you want a stronger herb flavor, gently warm the olive oil first before adding the garlic.
  • The ratio of 2 parts olive oil to 1 part balsamic vinegar is a good starting point for homemade olive oil and vinegar dip.
  • This simple appetizer for bread tastes best when served at room temperature.
